Located Southeast of Mexico City, Orizaba is third highest peak in North America, towering to 18,700 feet above sea level. Popocatepetl is the seventh highest peak in North America with an elevation of 17,887 feet - however, due to recent volcanic activity it is off limits to climbing. Iztaccihuatl reaches 17,373 ft. Our volcano trip combines a good mix of culture and climbing, and the Mexican volcanoes are an excellent introduction to high altitude mountaineering.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1 - Arrive in Mexico City. Your guide will meet you at the airport and will take you to the hotel.

Day 2 - Today we'll drive to La Joya at the base (13,124 ft) of Ixta (17,343). Tonight will be spent in a hut at the base of Ixta.

Day 3 - Wake up late and make a delicious breakfast at the Paso de Cortez cabin, while enjoying the view active Popo-Catépetl. We'll begin our glacier training class, which will allow us to safely and competently climb Ixta (17,343 feet). Later in the day, we'll prepare our packs to climb up to 15,000 feet, where we will setup high camp. This is also an important acclimatization day.

Day 4 - Rest day and prepare for summit departure. This is an important acclimatization day.

Day 5 - Today we'll rise early and make our push for the summit of Ixta (17,343 ft.) via the Ridge of the Sun. The ridge requires all of our mountaineering skills, and we¹ll work as a team to stay clear of all of the crevasses which are prevalent on the ridge.

Day 6 - Drive to Puebla. Today is a designated rest day and we'll take the opportunity to visit the Central Plaza and Cathedral some amazing cultural sites. Tonight we'll stay in a hotel and enjoy some fine local cuisine.

Day 7 - Drive to Tlachichuca, and then to the hut, Piedra Grande, at 14,000 feet via four-wheel-drive truck. We'll rest and prepare for our ascent the following day.

Day 8 - Summit day on Orizaba (18,850 ft.). Via an alpine start, we'll make our way from the hut to the Jamapa Glacier. Breathtaking views of Popa and Ixta make this a worthy summit, the 3rd highest in North America!

Day 9 - Drive to Mexico City and have a celebratory dinner.

Day 10 - Fly out of Mexico City.
