Your Itinerary

Day 1:
Saturday
Belize City - San Ignacio/ Ruta Maya Expedition
Upon arrival at Belize International Airport, clear customs and immigrations. You will be met and transferred approximately two hours to San Ignacio and Maya Mountain Lodge in the foothills of the Maya Mountain range. This afternoon is free to relax in your hammock or explore the grounds. A map and trail guide are provided to take you on a self-guided tour of the grounds and introduce you to many of the plants found in this region. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. Accommodations are in comfortable cottages with thatched or tiled roofs, hot water, private bath and ceiling fans.

Day 2:
Sunday
Cahal Pech & Mountain Pine Ridge
This morning, visit the nearby Mayan ruins of Cahal Pech where you will receive an introduction to the Mayan culture of this area before continuing on to Mountain Pine Ridge. A stop at spectacular Thousand-Foot Falls affords an incredible view and an opportunity for a picnic lunch. Then venture into Rio Frio Cave where huge stalactite and stalagmite formations invite exploration. Afterwards, a dip in the pools and cool waters of the Rio On will refresh and revive you for the return drive to Maya Mountain Lodge. Dinner and overnight.

Day 3:
Monday
Macal River / Medicine Trail
After breakfast, set out for a dug-out canoe ride up the Macal River to the Panti Trail of Mayan Medicine. The river banks thrive with birdlife including the Keel-billed Toucan, national bird of Belize, Green Iguanas lazily basking in the treetops, colorful butterflies, and countless species of orchids and bromeliads draping from the variety of hardwoods and palms.
Arriving at the trail, your guide will walk you through the jungle to point out the various plants used in traditional Mayan Medicine for healing and disease prevention. Modern scientists are just now beginning to realize the amazing benefits of these same plants which the Maya have utilized for thousands of years. Return trip downriver to San Ignacio, then back to Maya Mountan Lodge for lunch. The afternoon is free to relax or browse in San Ignacio's shops. Additional excursions such as horseback trail rides, canoeing or mountain biking may be arranged.

Day 4:
Tuesday
Tikal
Rise and shine early this morning for breakfast and departure overland to Tikal. On this adventure, you will cross the border into Guatemala via the western highway (driving time about three hours each way). Tikal is the grandest of all Mayan Ruins, and its stunning beauty will leave you breathless.
Climb to the top of the “Temple of the Jaguar” rising above the jungle to overlook the many temples and main plaza to imagine yourself in the hey-day of this thriving ancient city. Your guide will give you an excellent overview of the discoveries made here, an insight into the Mayan way of life, and the historical significance of the ruin. You will also encounter many species of birds and the rich flora of tropical hardwoods like Mahogany and Teak, along with countless ornamentals and edibles flourishing here. Relax by the swimming pool while watching monkeys and birds frolic in the trees. Overnight at the Tikal Lodge.

Day 5:
Wednesday
Cave’s Branch Caving Trip
After breakfast, transfer to Belize International Airport. Departing Maya Mountain Lodge this morning you’ll drive about 2 hours into the heart of the Maya Mountain range for a full day caving adventure.
Upon arrival at Cave’s Branch, you’ll be given an orientation and safety talk, before setting out on an unforgettable subterranean float trip. Sitting in innertubes with headlamps to light your way, you’ll float down an underground river, and marvel at the glittering stalagmites and stalagtites, and other unique cave formations. The river occasionally emerges into daylight, only to re-enter another cave moments later. The trip lasts about 3 hours, and includes a box lunch. Overnight at Jaguar Reef Lodge.

Day 6:
Thursday
Placencia
Take advantage of the free use of sea kayaks or sunfish. You may opt to bicycle to the Garifuna village of Seine Bight, about 2 & 1/2 mile ride or explore the town of Placencia, reputed to have the smallest main street in the world. Optional excursions that can be arranged for include snorkeling or diving at the reef, tours to the Cockcomb jaguar reserve, visiting nearby ruins of Lubaantun and Nimli Punit or river excursions to look for monkeys, birds, manatees and monkeys. Fishing for bonefish and permit may also be arranged with the Inn.

Day 7:
Friday
Placencia
Take advantage of the free use of sea kayaks or sunfish. You will be transferred to the Dangriga airstrip. From Belize, you will be able to connect with your international flight.
