The Mongolian Empire created by Chingis Khan and his grandson Kublai Khan was the largest contiguous empire recorded in history, and its scope has never been matched. Our extraordinary adventure will journey to sites which mark the rich and turbulent history of Mongolia and China, where the great Khans once ruled their vast empire.

We begin our odyssey in Beijing, where in 1272 Kublai Khan established the capital of his empire during his reign. Kublai Khan was proclaimed supreme Khan in China in 1260 and called the Son of Heaven by the Chinese. His ascension marked the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty in China, which lasted for 89 years. Jumping back through history, we will visit the magnificent Great Wall of China, the construction of which began in the 3rd century B.C. to protect Emperor Qin’s empire from the nomadic tribesmen of the Asian steppes. Emperor Qin also commissioned the building of his tomb when he became ruler at the age of 13. In Xian, we will explore the ancient grounds of his spectacular burial site which contain over 10,000 life-sized terracotta warriors—a testimony to the advanced culture and society of historic China.

In Mongolia, we’ll visit with nomadic families and experience how they have lived for centuries since the time of the great Khans, and travel to history-laden Kharakhorum. Chingis Khan and his son created the beautiful and legendary 13th-century capital of the Mongolian Empire to serve as the heart of their monolithic empire. This bustling, momentous capital was abandoned by Kublai Khan for his new city in Beijing. There are now only a few traces left of Kharakhorum, but Mongolia's largest and grandest monastery, neighboring Erdene Zuu, was reputedly constructed from the ruins of this once great city in the 16th century.
