The cows of the Porcupine Caribou Herd give birth to thousands of calves each spring as the land itself is waking up from a long dark winter. Early June is when the land comes alive in the Brooks Range, with new leaves and the first flowers brightening the tundra, and streams of caribou returning to their summer home.
We day hike each day looking for new life and the predators that follow them. Birds begin arriving daily from places as far away as the tip of South America. On this trip we'll be camped on a major pathway of the caribou, with good chances of also seeing bears, wolves and foxes that are drawn by the moving caribou.
This trip has a relaxed pace, with plenty of time for individual interests such as photography, and endless hours under the never-setting sun. We'll pass through the Gwitch'in Indian village of Arctic Village at the beginning and end of the trip.
