Your Itinerary
Day 1:
Arrival and transfer to a hotel in downtown Anchorage. For acclimatization a welcome-barbecue is offered in the evening.
(D)
Day 2:
On the way north to Denali National Park, visit Eklutna, an Indian village near a Russian orthodox cemetery with its onion dome chapel. A few miles before Talkeetna: Mount McKinley! Spend time gazing at this towering white mountain; so few people see IT! Talkeetna, an Indian word meaning "river of plenty", was settled around 1900 by gold prospectors and trappers. Now it is the rallying point of international mountain climbers. Join a jet boat safari and catch panoramic views of Mount McKinley again. See how trappers lived at the turn of the century. View nesting bald eagles, beaver activity, moose, black and grizzly bear roaming the riverbanks. For the highlight of your Alaskan experience, circle around Mt. McKinley and land on a glacier. The scenic flights are optional and pricing starts around $100 per person. After crossing Broad Pass, a major caribou migration route, overnight in Denali Park Village.
Day 3:
Discover the many wonders of Denali Park! Some people come to Denali to see the mountain, and others to see animals. Mount McKinley - leaps 20,320 feet above sea level. Join, the 12 hour long Kantishna Tour, through Polychrome Valley to the Kantishna Goldmining District. On tour, see plenty of caribou, bears, moose, prairie dogs, ptarmigans (state bird), etc. Trip includes refreshments en route with lunch served at Kantishna Roadhouse. Join interpretive activities that relate to the history of the Kantishna district: gold panning or sled dog demonstration. In the evening, a salmonbake with fresh Alaskan fish and other local specialty meals. Overnight in Denali Park Village.
(D)
Day 4:
From Denali Park travel the Denali and the Alaska Highway to Tok. Follow the south ridge of the Alaska Range mountains over the second highest pass, the Maclaren Pass, more than 4,000 feet high! The Denali Highway is a historic gold rush route that leads away from conventional tourism showing the true backcountry of Alaska. Tok is a little town on the Alaska Highway and serves as a support junction for Athabascan natives. Overnight in Tok.
Day 5:
The tour continues over "The Top of the World Highway" towards Dawson City. This panoramic route winds through mountains, valleys and gold mining sites deep into the northern part of the Yukon Territory. Dawson City, the famous historic gold rush town, was the largest city north of San Francisco and west of Winnipeg at the turn of the twentieth century. Ride the Midnight Dome and enjoy a panoramic view over the town far into the golden hinterland. In the evening, visit Diamond Tooth Gertie's Gambling Casino and see the show of Can Can dancing girls. Overnight in Dawson City.
Day 6:
Dawson City is situated in a protected valley of the Yukon River at the confluence of the Klondike River. Most of the historic buildings have been renovated in the spirit of 1898, the Klondike gold rush! Visit historic points of interest and adjacent gold mining fields on the banks of the Bonanza Creek. In the evening, step into the famous Variety Palace Grand Revue for a gold rush theatre. Overnight in historic downtown.
Day 7:
You continue on the Klondike Highway towards the capital of the Yukon Territory, Whitehorse. On the way, see several Posts from the Gold Rush days: Five Finger Rapids, Stewart Crossing or Moose Creek. In Whitehorse, visit museums or a variety theatre on your own. Overnight in the downtown of Whitehorse.
Day 8:
In the morning, visit the Salmon Fish ladder, the old Sternwheeler, SS Klondike, which plowed the Yukon River waters until 1955 and the historic site of Miles Canyon. Leaving Yukon's capital, drive a scenic route to Frazer where you embark the historic Whitepass & Yukon Route Railway (optional) or simply continue by road crossing the historic White Pass to Skagway; the ride leads through breathtaking gorges and scenic mountain sides. Skagway, another Gold Rush town, is almost completely under historic protection. Overnight in nostalgic downtown hotel.
Day 9:
In the morning, explore the oldest Gold Rush city in Alaska. In the afternoon, transfer to the Alaska Marine Ferry for a cruise or take a scenic flight above glaciers and the Gastineau Channel to Juneau, the capital of Alaska. Juneau is known as the most scenic capital of all states in the USA and it is also the only capital not accessible by road. Overnight in Juneau.
Day 10:
Join a day-long glacier wildlife cruise to the pristine Tracy Arm. In the evening, drive to Salmon Creek and observe salmon running up the stream. Next to the creek, enjoy an all-you-can eat salmon bake dinner in the light of a campfire. Overnight in Juneau.
Day 11:
Fly to Anchorage and drive south along the scenic Turnagain Arm, discovered by Capt. Cook in 1778. Visit Portage Glacier Center and see "Voices of the Ice", a dramatic show about Alaska's rivers of ice. Back on the scenic byway, see the damage left by the 1964 earthquake before you enter Girdwood and Alyeska Resort. Optional: in Girdwood, visit the Jade Factory or pan for gold at the Crow Creek Gold Mine; take the tramway to the top of Mt. Alyeska for a spectacular view of Cook Inlet and the surrounding mountains. The Seven Glaciers restaurant, on top of the mountain, offers endless views and fine cuisine. Overnight in Alyeska Resort.
Day 12:
On the way to Anchorage, stop at Beluga Point and look for the white whales chasing salmon into the mouth of the inlet. In Anchorage, a city tour including the visit of the resolution plaza in the shadow of Capt. Cook's monument concludes the voyage. Transfer to the airport. End of tour.
