This well balanced itinerary allows participants to explore in-depth the wild savannas of East Africa on a classic nature safari, and spend quality time with the neighbourly people of northeastern Tanzania. This is truly the best of both worlds!
Range over the vast Serengeti Plains in open-roof safari vehicles to view and photograph one of earth’s grandest wildlife spectacles in action. Explore two more wildlife treasures: Lake Manyara National Park, one of Africa’s finest small game areas, and the Ngorongoro Crater, a 100-square miles caldera teeming with wildlife including the endangered black rhino, elephant and hippo. A visit to the famed Olduvai Gorge archeological site nearby will surely encourage participants to reflect on the earliest history of humankind.
A bushwalk and overnight in the Northern Tanzanian village of Longido will introduce you to the various medicines the Masaai derive from local plants. You’ll also visit a village boma (a traditional living enclosure) for an experience that few travelers to East Africa have.
Returning to Arusha where our expedition began, participants will work with local artists on Tanzanian-style batik prints, learn to cook traditional Tanzanian food, and try their hands at carving with local Makonde masters. There’ll be plenty of time for independent exploration of Arusha and its shops before this adventure draws to a memorable close.
