You have heard of the Mosquito Coast, but very few have ever been there. On our La Mosquitia odyssey we journey through one of Central America’s largest protected areas, the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve. We’ll stay in rustic huts and travel among indigenous Miskito, Pech and Garifuna natives living a traditional lifestyle. Venture into the heart of one of the last true cultural and natural history reserves in the world. Experience roaring rivers and still lagoons, sandy beaches on tiny islands, coastal mangrove swamps, thick jungles and pine savannas. Join us on a true adventure through this special land of magic and mystery!
Your Itinerary
Day 1:
Welcome to Honduras! You have arrived to discover this hidden jewel of natural adventure. Upon arrival in San Pedro Sula, we’ll transport you to our accommodations, where you can relax and get accustomed to your new surroundings.

Day 2:
Our journey begins, as we depart from the city toward the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve along the far northeastern coast of Honduras. Notice immediately the beauty and magic of the Caribbean as it joins the mystique of the unknown jungle. Our landing at the small fishing camp at Palacios precludes a waterway departure from civilization. Our transport itself becomes the journey, as we explore the coastal region by motorized dugout.

Day 3:
Days 3-5: Continuing inland, up the Rio Platano and deeper into the reserve, we will spend time exploring the water “highways and byways” via motorized dugout boats, taking breaks to sun, soak, swim and hike among an incredibly diverse array of flora and fauna. In this region, we’ll keep our eyes and ears peeled for such exotic creatures as white-faced and mantled Howler monkeys, tapir, the giant anteater, scarlet macaws, toucans and the magnificent harpy eagle, to name a
few. This is a part of the largest intact virgin rainforest in all of Central America.
Our home base for the next few days is Las Marias, where we join villagers and observe local handicrafts. This is the area inhabited by Miskito and Pech communities, and we will witness their traditional subsistence lifestyle. We will also have the opportunity to overnight in the forest, camping and hiking along the way. Wildlife viewing and hiking opportunities are endless with our knowledgeable local guides, as we find ourselves switching from motor power to small boats known as pipantes that are pushed along by wooden poles. A good pair of hiking boots and tent or mosquito netting is mandatory here. Also expect to wade across waterways in some places.

Day 6:
Our last couple of days are spent heading back to San Pedro Sula as we continue to explore the wilds of the Moquito Coast en route. Early mornings, in particular, will offer spectacular opportunities to witness birds and other wildlife. Upon return, we will bid you farewell or help to connect you to the next leg of your ongoing journey, perhaps a few days of R&R on the world famous Bay Islands and one of the greatest coral reef systems in the world!
