Your Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival in Belize

You will be met on arrival at the Belize International Airport and transferred to Jaguar Paw Jungle Lodge with a stop en route at the small and informal Belize Zoo, home only to Belizean animals.

Jaguar Paw snuggles in thick lush jungle near the crystalline waters of the Caves Branch River. The Lodge offers top-notch adventure in the day with cool, comfortable surroundings at night.

Sixteen one-of-a kind uniquely decorated air conditioned rooms provide the conveniences of home smack in the middle of Belize's pristine rainforest. Yes its just you - and the wildlife - and, of course other guests.

Day 2:
Highlights of the Rainforest

After breakfast take a boat up the Caves Branch River through 5 different cave openings. See the Jaguar foot prints or maybe, if you are very lucky, even a Jaguar.

Return to the hotel for lunch and finish the day with a jungle walk. Learn many of the secrets that the jungle holds; natural medicines, herbs, barks and many plants that are still used today by natural healers throughout Central America. Ancient ruins, burial sites and altars lurk below the shadows, hidden by time, in areas few have ever seen.

If you are feeling adventurous this trip can be swapped for an All-Day Cave-Tubing Trip which begins only minutes from your room. In an inner tube float down miles of shallow waterways and through five spectacular caverns (some have been photographed by National Geographic!)

Day 3:
Temples of the Maya

Whilst Europe was deep in the "Dark Ages", the inhospitable and hostile jungles of Central America were being transformed into the home of one of the World's great civilisations. Temples, Pyramids and Palaces were built by peasant farmers and slaves without the benefit of beasts of burden or even the wheel. These were painted in the sacred colours of the Maya; red, blue, yellow and green and were ruled over by immensely powerful Kings who were regarded as living Gods by their subjects.

Today you will explore the realms of the mysterious Maya people on a full day trip to the Cayo region of Western Belize near the Guatemalan border. You will visit two of Belize's favourite ancient Mayan sites in the company of an expert guide. Firstly, a stop will be made at Cahal Pech, once the home of a Maya Royal Family, and Xunantunich which is reached by crossing the Mopan River by hand-cranked ferry. Time to explore and climb the ruins which are great for panoramic photographs.

Day 4:
The Crystal Cave

Explore one of the oldest accessible caves on the planet on a half day guided tour of the Crystal Cave.

Venture below the surface, through narrow passages and magnificent cathedral size caverns...all filled with spectacular shimmering crystal stalactites, stalagmites, rim stone dams, flow stone and pillars like rock columns. Visit 'Wonderland' and see natures most "AWESOME" creations whose destiny it was to never be seen by man .. millions of years in creation, with only your headlamp to light your way.

Return to the Lodge for an afternoon of relaxation by the pool. Tonight you will see a completely different side to the rainforest as your guide takes you on a Night Walk in the Jungle.

Day 5:
Jungle Road to the Jaguars

This morning you will be transferred down one of the most scenic roads in Belize - the Hummingbird Highway. You will be driven through lush tropical rainforest before it gently gives way to the Citrus Plantations of the Stann Creek Valley framed by the majestic Maya Mountains in the background.

A short stop will also be made at the Inland Blue Hole National Park. Your destination is the first class Jaguar Reef Resort for a three night stay. Accommodations are comfortable thatched cabanas right on the beach.

Day 6:
Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve

After a relaxing breakfast set out from the Lodge in a four- wheel drive vehicle. The first stop is at the Maya center at the entrance to the Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Reserve.

Stop briefly to sign in and to view the beautiful hand-carved slate plaques, baskets, clothing and jewelry made in the Village by the local Mayan Indians, who have formed an arts and crafts co-operative.

Continue deep into the dense tropical rainforest f othe Cockscomb Basin, which has a total protected area of over 250,000 acres. Your guide will then take you on several established trails, each with its own unique characteristics.

As you walk the trails your guide will interpret the flora and fauna which make this park such an amazing and unique place. This Reserve is believed to have the world's highest density of jaguar as well as puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarundi. Black Howler Monkeys and Red Macaws have recently been re-introduced to the reserve.

Day 7:
Reef, River and Snorkel Boat Trip

Depart by boat from the Lodge after breakfast to the Sittee River for a day filled with photo-opportunities! Excellent bird life here including egrets, herons and hundreds of other species. Green iguana thrive here and you will soon learn to spot them in the jungle canopy that borders the river. After several miles of spectacular natural scenery the boat turns into the 'cut', a narrow passageway hand dug through the mangrove by the Natives many years ago in order to access the rich fishing grounds of Anderson Lagoon.

After a slow cruise around this pristine lagoon continue down the narrowing waterway and out into the Caribbean Sea. Soon you will see dozens of beautiful tropical islands. Watch closely for bottle-nosed dolphins; they love to cruise this protected inner waterway and are often sighted between here and the Barrier Reef. The first snorkel stop will be Bread & Butter Caye. Here you have easy access to the beautiful and virgin coral gardens that thrive off the Island's Northwest corner.

The next snorkel stop is at Whale Shoal, a tiny coral island surrounded by beautiful stands of elkhorn and staghorn coral. Stop for lunch at Carrie Bow Caye, site of the widely acclaimed Smithsonian Institute Coral Reef Research Center. There is excellent snorkeling found off the Eastern shore. Slowly head North between Twin Cayes, well known for their large population of manatees.

A slow cruise around Man-O-War Caye, a designated Bird Sanctuary and home to large populations of magnificent frigate birds, brown boobies and pelicans before departing for the snow white sands that surround Coco Plum Caye to swim, snorkel, sunbathe and explore.

As the sun starts to set over the magnificent Maya Mountains, visible in the distance, bid farewell to this beautiful Island and begin the 30 minute boat journey home.
