Bicycle tour from Addis Ababa across the high plateau of the Horn of Africa. This tour passes through some spectacular countryside and traverses some the culturally and historically rich Abyssinian highlands.
Your Itinerary
Day 1:
Explore Addis Ababa, museum, market, etc. Run errands: bank, post office. Points of interest: urban design, division of labor by gender and age.

Day 2:
Cycle to Teji, 34 miles to the high plateau and land of the Orominya. Points of interest: population density decreases and land use becomes agrarian.

Day 3:
Onward to Wolkite, 60 miles. Only the third day and meet a third ethnic group. Points of interest: domicile architecture of the Gurage.

Day 4:
Cycle down to the Omo River Valley and then climb out, a total of 36 miles to Kombi. Points of interest: the Omo people the river valley, and the Rift Valley Escarpment.

Day 5:
Enjoy the thrill of cycling through the dramatic highlands, 38 miles to Asendabo. Points of interest: road side handicrafts.

Day 6:
We head for Yebbu, 46 miles through another fertile high plateau. Points of interest: agricultural land and bird life.

Day 7:
We cycle to Dembi, the largest town in western Ethiopia, 40 miles. An affluent part of Ethiopia, derived from coffee. Points of interest: Jima (local 'civilization'), coffee growing region.

Day 8:
Cycle to Bedele, 37 miles, through eucalyptus, cypress, pine and natural forests. Points of interest: several species of monkies; home of one of the main breweries.

Day 9:
Cycle 34 miles to Arjo, more off the beaten track with fewer people and vehicles. Points of interest: more monkies and the forest.

Day 10:
Another 34 mile day to Nekemte which is a regional center but still on the edge. Points of interest: the Wolega Museum.

Day 11:
Turning the corner we start cycling back towards Addis Abada, 50 miles through the high moorlands. Points of interest: spectacular panoramic views.

Day 12:
Cycle on to Gedo, 37 miles, a relatively light spin compared to the previous few days. Points of interest: Guder Falls.

Day 13:
An almost flat in places, an almost rugged free day, 59 miles to Ginchi. Points of interest: the famous national water bottling plant.

Day 14:
The final leg to complete the circuit is a 56 mile ride back to Addis Ababa. Points of interest: proposed future capital for Menelik II (deposed).
