Japan has proven to be more of an adventurous destination than one might have guessed. Intrepid's focus is on contact with local people, getting out into the countryside, visiting temples and shrines, traveling on interesting modes of transportation, learning ancient traditions, sampling incredible cuisine, staying in local style guesthouses and immersing ourselves in everything Asian. We do all this and more in Japan, which we have found to be a surprisingly adventurous destination with so much to offer.
Your Itinerary
Day 1:
Join Tokyo. 2-3 Nikko, shrines and temples. 4-5 Hakone, hot springs and views of Mt Fuji. 6-7 Takayama, travel on the bullet train. 8-9 Hiroshima, A-Bomb museum, Miya-jima island. 10-13 Kyoto, temples, castles, culture and architecture. 14 Ends Kyoto.
Accommodation & Meals: Traditional Inns (12nts), Hotel (1nt). Allow $550 for meals not included.
Mode of Travel: Bus, Bullet Train, express train, cable car, Walking
Comment: Japan is a fascinating country to travel through, but there are many aspects to travelling that require patience, understanding and an open mind. Please be aware that behaviour you consider acceptable at home may not be in Japan. Your leader will advise you on appropriate customs and conduct that will make your trip all the more enjoyable. Some travelers might like to try the communal bathing in the hot springs (no swimming costumes allowed), but this is always optional. Train travel is comfortable, but does require travelers to carry their own lugguge up and down station stairwells. All travellers must arrive with a 14 day JR rail pass. Please arrange this through your agent. The cost is approximately $430.
