From 1954 to 1975, the Ben Hai River served as the demarcation line between South Vietnam and North Vietnam. The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) consisted of an area of 5 kms to either side of the demarcation line, running more or less parallel to national route 9 and perpendicular to the Ho Chi Minh trail. During the Vietnam War, the area just south of the DMZ was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of the conflict. Dong Ha, Quang Tri, Con Tien, Cam Lo, Camp Carroll, the Rockpile, Khe Sanh, Lang Vay… became oft-repeated household names in Vietnam and the US.
