Theater in the round. The Sargent ice field has carved out a stunning bowl in the local granite. We establish our comfortable base camp on the remnant terminal moraine of this Pleistocene excavation with great views of both the open Sound in front and the ice berg dappled waters of the quiet bay behind. Fresh water rushes down each side of the Bay from the retreating ice field. It would be easy to be entertained for the entire time watching the 15' tide turn bluegreen water into cobblestone mussel beds, but why with an abundance of activities that surrounds you. Great hikes up in the granite shield, local paddling to Nellie Juan glacier and longer paddle trips to nearby scenic bays. This is a very flexible and relaxing trip to a magnificent landmark.

Nellie Juan glacier is in very active retreat which translates into lots of calving and numerous animals seek out the protection of the lagoon behind our base camp for refuge. At the right time of year black bears hunt the spawning salmon and the high country is wide open for exploring countless lakes and ponds. This can be a very relaxing trip on the beach or a trip packed with activities - you make the call.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1:
Trip begins in Anchorage with a drive down the very scenic Seward Highway to Whittier. We board our water taxi for a 1 1/2 hr ride south to Derickson Bay and establish our base camp on the spit. This is really an incredible area. Either paddle or hike in the afternoon.
