Belize Adventure Week -- our ever-popular, action-packed tour -- explores this fascinating country using a multi-sport format. Our trend-setting itinerary is the culmination of nineteen years of exploring Belize; and we have designed an itinerary that packs in twelve different sports into eight days!

Your Itinerary

Day 1:

Saturday: Arrive at Belize International Airport. Take a taxi to the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel for a 4:30 p.m. meeting in the lobby. We leave for Casa Maya Resort no later than 5:00 p.m. Please note: it is important that your flight arrive no later than 4:30 p.m. in order to guarantee that you not miss your ride to western Belize. If you must land later than 4:30, you can catch up with the group (see “If Late or Delayed”). Dinner and orientation at Cheers Restaurant on the Western Highway, site of an orchid nursery. Continue on to Casa Maya, our base for the first three nights of the trip. Includes: (D)

Day 2:

Sunday: After an early breakfast we drive to the Caves Branch put-in. After river orientation we launch on our underground journey in rafts and inflatable kayaks running the Caves Branch River (Class I-II.) We navigate four underground caverns by headlamp! This unique trip combines caving and river running for an unusual, captivating ride. We paddle in complete darkness. Stops include short hikes up tributaries and a visit to a Mayan “totem pole” carved into a stalagmite. We also negotiate a quarter-mile portage on a jungle trail. This fabulous odyssey is arguably the best one-day adventure in the country, a must-do for any visit to Belize! We return to Casa Maya for dinner and overnight. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 3:

Monday: Today: whitewater! We run the Mopan River in sit-on-top hardshell kayaks (late model whitewater kayaks also available) that allow everyone to learn to kayak and to enjoy the many small drops and waterfalls on this jungle river. Putting in near the Guatemala border, we teach kayak strokes and maneuvers which we then practice while going downstream. Numerous, small, Class II rapids are run in this eight-mile stretch.

We take out at Clarissa Falls Cottages where Chena serves up an excellent Belizean home-cooked meal. This river day serves as a great warm-up for our upcoming sea kayaking adventure. The Mopan boasts abundant bird life and iguanas, and it is a favorite recreational area for locals, whom we often see along the shore.

After lunch we visit Xunantunich ruins, home of Mayan rulers who controlled a large part of western Belize and Guatemala. We climb the Castillo, a 200-foot high pyramid that is one of the tallest man-made structures in the country. Overnight at Casa Maya. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 4:

Tuesday: After breakfast we pack up and drive toward the coast, stopping at a jungle lodge for our final day of inland sports. We split the group, with half mountain biking and the other half caving in the morning. After lunch at the lodge, the groups switch activities. We mountain bike about ten miles along single-track jungle trails and paved and gravel roads. The single-track trail is newly created; it’s a fantastic ride through the rainforest! With vertical of about 150', this ride requires some technical skill and advanced beginner to intermediate mountain biking ability.

During the caving expedition, we enter Footprint Cave via inner tube on a small jungle creek. We then explore Mayan ceremonial chambers replete with altars and artifacts. We also view huge crystalline columns and a statue of the Mayan Monkey God. We then drive to Dangriga, passing through jungle-covered peaks surrounded by citrus farms. We check into Pelican Beach Resort, a wonderful oceanside lodge, where we also have dinner. You will earn your rest tonight. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 5:

Wednesday: Time to hit the Caribbean! After breakfast we ride 1.5 hours via motor boat to our Water Sports Center on Long Caye, where we join the Sea Kayak Glover’s Reef group already on the island. We move into our tents, go snorkeling, and then have lunch. In the afternoon we complete our sea kayak orientation. Our guides cover paddle strokes, entering and exiting the kayak from the water, and other basic techniques. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 6:

Thursday: After breakfast we paddle to a nearby patch reef to practice what we learned: snorkeling from the kayaks. Scuba diving is another option, whether you are a certified diver or want to try scuba for the first time. In the afternoon choose between more diving, kayaking, or surf kayaking orientation. You could also choose “hammock surfing”! Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 7:

Friday: We begin our last full day with windsurfing instruction. Guests may also choose between activities such as kayak rolling lessons, scuba courses, kayak kite sailing to nearby Middle Caye (home of the Marine Research Center), fishing, or snorkeling around the island. Our Belizean cooks prepare feasts for us, which we enjoy in between this myriad of activities. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 8:

Saturday: Island activities in the morning. After lunch we take a boat shuttle back to Belize City, arriving by 3-5 p.m. Later we meet for dinner at our favorite restaurant; we stay at the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 9:

Sunday: Earliest day to fly home.

Notes:
Airfare is not included in the tour price.

Small-Trip Surcharge: All trips have a minimum requirement of 4 guests; however, we will run a trip for two to three guests with an additional surcharge of $250/person. When you sign up for a trip, please be aware you will be charged this additional fee if fewer than four people sign up.
