Honduras is located south east of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and Belize, less than 3 hours by air from Florida. The Bay Islands lie off this northern coast of Honduras in Central America, amidst the spectacular coral reefs. The island group consists of three main islands - Roatan, Utila and Guanaja - and many smaller cayes and atolls. No high-rise hotels, no hawkers, no throngs of tourists, no roads, cars or telephone wires. None of these things exist on Guanaja to spoil this tropical paradise with its spectacular coral reefs and white sand shores. Though the island is home to several villages of fishermen and merchants, the majority of its land-mass is still a wilderness in the truest sense of the word. Guests are accommodated in individual cabins scattered throughout tropical gardens. While kayaking overnights and meals are arranged at other small inns and resorts. Each expedition is lead by a bilingual guide, experienced in boating, diving, and the local history of the islands.

Once you arrive at West Peak, outings for the day can be arranged. From the West Peak docks guests can stroll along the beach, gentle surf and coral shoals; and allow themselves to disappear into the warm solitude of their own private, palm-shaded cove. These shores are part of one of the largest reef systems in the world. The island has a well-deserved reputation for world class diving and snorkeling. The reefs of Guanaja encompass many superb underwater seascapes for scuba & snorkeling exploration - from wall dives to wrecks, from volcanic outcroppings to crags, crannies and caves. The Guanaja reefs still maintain their pristine nature in crystal clear waters with an abundant diversity of fish and coral life. From the beaches guests and crew also may launch traditional island dories for short journeys to various dive sites. Kayakers on the 1-week trip around the island can add a day or two of diving as they visit other inns and resorts around the island. Scuba activities at West Peak are limited to experienced divers. The full circumnavigation does require a level of boating skill.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1 - Saturday. Arrive at the Guanaja airstrip early afternoon, and go by water taxi to West Peak Inn. Have dinner at WPI, and stroll the beach in a red tropical sunset. (L) (D).

Day 2 – Sunday. Familiarization, kayak practice, snorkel, swim, and trip planning. Beginning kayakers will have the opportunity to learn and test their paddling skills. (B) (L) (D).

Day 3 – Monday. Breakfast at WPI, and then depart up the north shore of the island. On route snorkel at Blue Rock, eat packed lunch. Set up camp in evening on beach above Michael Rock. Stroll down the beach for dinner at Island House or other small, local cafe. (B) (L) (D).

Day 4 – Tuesday. Breakfast at Island House, hike to the waterfalls and cool off in the fresh water pools before returning to the beach. Might choose to do a scuba dive from here. Kayak to Mangrove Bight or try for a further distance into NorthEast Bight. Set up camp and dinner at local restaurant. (B) (L) (D).

Day 5 – Wednesday. Early breakfast and paddle down the southeast coast among a chain of small atolls. Overnight camping on one of the atolls as guests on a private island. (B) (L) (D).

Day 6 - Thursday. Breakfast and explore the tiny isle, kayak to Katrain Cay and raft together at one of the dive buoys for some excellent snorkeling (deep water exit and entrance from kayaks). Paddle into Bonacca docks and take a walking tour of town, and then head for Southwest Cay with packed lunch. (B) (L) (D).

Day 7 – Friday. A free day for hiking, swimming and beachcombing. (B) (L) (D).

Day 8 – Saturday. Morning departure from Guanaja; go by water taxi to the airstrip. (B) (L).
