Island birding very often includes endemic species, and Jamaica is no exception. It hosts 28 species found nowhere else in the world and there is a good chance we will see all of them. Plus there are many Caribbean specialties to search for in Jamaica's varied habitats which include mangrove wetlands, arid limestone forests, and lush rainforest on mountains that range to 7000 feet. We will feed Streamertail Hummingbirds and Jamaican Mangos from our hands at the Rockland Feeding Station on Montego Bay. In the surrounding unspoiled woodland we'll search for Ruddy Quail-Dove, Jamaican Vireo, and Arrow-headed Warbler. Cockpit Country is known for Jamaican Crow, Yellow-billed Parrot, and Black-billed Parrot. Marshall's Pen near Mandeville may yield Common Potoo, Jamaican Owl, Jamaican Becard, Crested Quail-Dove, and Rufous-throated Solitaire. The Blue Mountains receive up to 300 inches of rain annually and host Blue Mountain Vireo, Jamaican Blackbird, Ring-tailed Pigeon, White-eyed Thrush, and Chestnut-bellied Cuckoo. Birds such as Loggerhead Kingbird, Jamaican Tody, Orangequit, and Stripe-headed Tanager are common and widespread. Jamaica is a beautiful island and a fine location to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday.
