| The Basilica-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John's is the metropolitan cathedral of the Roman Catholic archbishop of St. John's and the mother church and symbol of Roman Catholics in Newfoundland, Canada. The project began under the leadership of Bishop Michael Anthony Fleming. Sixteen years elapsed from the time excavation work began in 1839 until the cathedral was consecrated in 1855. The interior of the church contains many priceless artifacts and works of art. The stained glass windows came from Beauvais, London and Dublin. There is also an extensive collection of Irish and Italian neoclassical religious sculpture. |
