Bohus Fortress lies along the old Norwegian - Swedish border in Kungälv, Bohuslän, Sweden, north east from Hisingen where the Göta river splits into two branches (20 kilometers north of Gothenburg). It commands its surroundings from a 40 meter high cliff, with the river forming a natural moat about it. The history of the fortress dates back to the 14th century and it involves kings, queens, soldiers, wars, intrigues and changing fortune. It was a border fortress for centuries and was fought for several times, until it became Swedish in the peace treaty of 1658.
