Cape Coast Castle is described as one of the six most "beautiful" slave castles still in existence. It was originally built int he 1650s by the Swedes and is almost with a cannon shot of the Portuguese built slave castle, Elmina. Like many of the other slave castles this one changed hands a number of times having been captured by British, Dutch or French. Today it is the Museum of Slavery, created by the Smithsonian Institue, and now caters to the increasing number of African Americans who arrive searching for their roots.
