The Castillo de Santa Bárbara, originally built to protect Alicante and virtually surrounded by sea, remains a major landmark in the city, offering panoramic views. Its foundations date back to the 11th century, and remains have been found here from the Romans and Moors, but most of the building was constructed from the 14th-16th centuries. It was declared open to the public in 1963 and in the same year the two lifts that go up inside the mountain were inaugurated.
