| The Cathedral of Toledo is one of the three 13th century High Gothic cathedrals in Spain and is considered to be the magnum opus of the Gothic style in Spain. The great cathedral, which measures almost 120 m in length and 60 m width, was begun by one Master Martin, but is mostly the work of Petrus Petri, who died in 1291. The cathedral has five aisles, and large transepts, with the main chapel enclosed by a double ambulatory. The result is an original concept of space, in which the vertical thrust is much more restrained than in most of the buildings directly inspired by French or Northern influence. In its present form, the Toledo cathedral is the most representative of all the cathedrals in Spain.Its picturesque superposition of styles is the result of five centuries of unceasing architectural activity, during which a succession of memorial chapels, mostly the gift of nobles and princes, has been added to the original Gothic structures. |
