Changi Prison is a prison in the eastern part of Singapore. The British built the prison in 1936 to hold only 600 prisoners. But during the fall of Singapore to Japaness hands, it was a prisoner of war camp used by Japan to hold Allied (mainly British) POWs during World War II. From 1942 to 1944, about 3000 civilian internees were housed in Changi Prison. Thousands of soldiers and civilians were starved, worked and tortured there during Japan's occupation of Singapore until 1945. In 2004, old Changi Prison is demolished only the front wall, gate and a watch tower remains. A new modern Changi Prison to hold 23,000 prisoners by 2008.
