| Particularly admired by Napoleon, the magnificent Chateau du Fontainebleau, near Paris, France, has been the main summer residence for French Monarchs for hundreds of years and is a sight no Paris tourist should miss. Starting life as a hunting lodge in the 12th century, it was replaced by a Renaissance-style château in 1538 and subsequently enlarged by a succession of kings. Napoleon famously described the Château de Fontainebleau as, "the work of centuries, the home of kings". The interior of this stunning château is truly remarkable. Successive kings have left their marks on the furnishing, decor, paintings, tapestries and beautiful objects over the years. |
