Epcot is an acronym for "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow" and was originally envisioned by Walt Disney to have real residents living and working in a technically advanced community. The park opened on October 1, 1982, and was named EPCOT Center from 1982 to 1993. Based on square footage, it was the largest Disney theme park in the world until 1998, when Disney`s Animal Kingdom opened.
