This legendary desert is filled with many mythic tales, and is still untouristed enough to be the 'X' factor in any Asian travel itinerary. Marco Polo and his dad did the hard yakka across Mongolia and the Gobi Desert back in the thirteenth century. Though it's easier on the tootsies these days, it can still be a long and arduous trip.
