| After the purchase of a German Meridian Circle, a new timekeeping device, which was too big for the original observatory, the Carleton College, in Northfield, Minnesota, decided to build Goodsell. In 1890, Dr. Edward H. Williams gave the college $15,000 to buy a 16.2 inch refractor telescope to occupy the Goodsell’s large dome. When the 22 foot long refractor was hoisted through the slit in the dome in 1890, it was the 6th largest in the United States and 12th largest in the world. |
