| Light-Horse Harry sold the original lot to Philip Richard Fendall, who built the house in 1785, in Alexandria, Virginia. It was home to 37 Lees of Virginia until 1903. John L. Lewis, the American labor leader, was its last private owner. His estate sold it to the Virginia Trust for Historic Preservation, which opened it as a museum in 1974. The trust is renovating the structure today with the goal of bolstering its structure and restoring it to its 1785 appearance, right down to the paint colors. It's a treasure of Lee family furniture, heirlooms, and documents. |
