The site was discovered in 1570 by Diego Garcia de Palacio, but of the excavations were undertaken there only starting from the XIX century. It is one of the major sites of Maya civilization. The ruins of its acropolis and its monumental places testify to the three great stages of its development, before its abandonment at the beginning of X century.
