Construction was begun on Longwood House in 1860. It was to be a "town house" for Haller and Julia Nutt and their children. Haller Nutt was a millionaire businessman and planter and was a Federal sympathizer. Longwoods` completion was halted by the Civil War, but what was completed is truly amazing. Its octagonal shape is very elaborate and it has been preserved in its incomplete state. Finial atop dome was reconstructed in 1993 by the Pilgrimage Garden Club.
