| Native Americans were definitely accustomed to the beauty of the eastern most point of Long Island as the name Montauk came from their translation meaning "Hilly Country". Historians establish that Native Americans occupied this point 3,000 years before the first European settlers. The Montauk Lighthouse was authorized by the Second Congress, and commissioned by the signature of George Washington who predicted the light would stand for 200 years. Montauk is the fourth oldest active light in America. |
