Myeongdong Cathedral

| This is the first brick-laid Gothic building ever built in Korea. It was begun in 1894 and completed 1898. It is in the shape of a cross, with three hallways. The main building is 23m high while the steeple rises to 45m while the architectural style us Gothic, there is no complex ornamentation. The use of bricks instead of stone results in a unique use of space in the interior. All the bricks for this cathedral were fired in the brickyard at Han-gang tong. Twenty types of bricks in two colors, red and gray, were used in the construction, to beautiful effect. |
