Nitra Castle was the residence of counts of Nitra and Great Moravian monarchs (Pribina and Svätopluk). It was built in the 9th – 11th centuries and resisted the Tatar attack (1241) but surrendered to the Ottoman offence (1663). It was following this that the castle gained its present shape with a grand renaissance-baroque fortification. The castle was and still remains the residence of Nitra´s bishopric (cathedral and palace).
