The old granite fort situated in the very heart of Palakkad town is one of the best preserved in Kerala. It was built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766. The fort was taken over and modified by the British in 1790. It is now preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India. British army captured the fort in 1790. It is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved forts in Kerala and is looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India. You can spot martyr's Column and Open Air Auditorium called "Rappadi" in the open spaces right in the middle of the fort.
