The Estonian Open Air was founded in 1957 and opened to the visitors in 1964. Old Estonian vernacular buildings together with exhibited commodities help to depict the daily life of peasants in the 18-20th centuries. The territory of the museum is divided into four parts of corresponding typical village types: Western Estonia, Northern Estonia, Southern Estonia and the islands. In each region farmyards of different wealth and age stand in the central position. There are twelve farmyards exhibited today.
