The Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid was commissioned by Charles III in the late 18th century and provides a lovely green respite in the middle of a very busy capital city. Open year-round, the botanical garden is a favorite spot for locals searching for a little lunchtime relaxation, and is a popular tourist attraction as well. Being relatively small (about 8 hectares), it has a total of about 30,000 plants and flowers and 1,500 trees.
