| The Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge, in Ulster County, New York, is a lovely place on a summer day, a fragrant green expanse humming with wildlife and capped with a vast blue dome. It is also home to seldom-seen, grassland-dependent migratory birds, such as the Henslow sparrow, upland sandpipers and short-eared owls. Yet up until 1994, the refuge was the site of the Galeville Military Airport. In a turn on the familiar man-tames-nature story, this ecological gem owes its existence to the army, which in the 1940s filled a wetland to make the airstrip. |
