| Built in 1869 on the far western edge of Des Moines, Terrace Hill remains today a towering landmark amid the high-rise skyline of Iowa’s capital city. Originally conceived and constructed by Iowa’s first millionaire, Benjamin Franklin Allen, Terrace Hill became the home of magnate Frederick Marion Hubbell in 1884. In 1971, the Hubbell family donated the Second Empire-style mansion and its eight acres of grounds to the state of Iowa to serve as the official residence of Iowa’s governors. |
