Located a mile east of Concord's Monument Square and just a few steps east of Orchard House, The Wayside is the house Louisa May Alcott described in her book. The Alcotts did live here for a brief time, as did Nathaniel Hawthorne and Margaret Sidney. Louisa May Alcott grew up in Concord, had a crush on Ralph Waldo Emerson, and was friends with Henry David Thoreau, but then moved to Boston and liked it better. The Wayside has a free audiovisual program and several exhibits dealing with the house's famous former residents.
