Even if you're not going hiking,
DOBRINISHTE
is an attractive village to visit, where sheep- and cattle-breeding, lumbering and woodcarving are the main industries, augumented by a bit of tourism. Its attractions include three water-powered
fulling mills
(
valyavitsi
) for beating wool into felt; the nineteenth-century
Church of Petār i Pavel
, with lovely iconostasis by Debārsko woodcarvers; a garden of mountain edelweiss flowers; and three outdoor pools fed by hot mineral springs, where you can bathe. There are also good walks to be enjoyed in the vicinity - for example to the
Valyavitsa Falls
(30min), in the area known as Sveta Nikola.
Despite being so near Bansko, there is no bus service and only five trains a day (two of which leave ridiculously early), so you may have to resort to a taxi to get there and back. If you want to
stay
, the best of the family hotels is the
Viola
(tel 07447/2303; US$18-36), on the outskirts of the village, which has TV and fireplaces in most of rooms.
