After Koprivshtitsa, other towns in the Sredna Gora are an anticlimax, particularly
PANAGYURISHTE
, 39km southwest, whose memorials to the Rising hardly compare with Koprivshtitsa's magnificent houses. With a car, you could consider driving south across the mountains simply for the pleasure of the scenery en route - relying on meagre public transport however (one
bus
a day from Koprivshtitsa, several more from Pazardzhik to the south, and three
trains
daily from Plovdiv), it hardly seems worth it. Another drawback is that there's no tourist accommodation in town, so you risk being stranded without a bed after the last bus has left for Hisar or Sofia.
The Town
Despite its antiquity as a settlement, the existing town is predominantly modern, as Panagyurishte was set ablaze by the Turks for its participation in the April Rising - the town was the base for Georgi Benkovski's cavalry division. The most obvious...
