Best toasts !

What about writing here the best toasts that we know or heard somewhere, sometimes and that we like till now? Sorry for my confusing English.

Irish man October 12th, 2005 08:50 AM

toast

My fav toast, it's an Irish one!

"When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

Impressions?

Mommy October 12th, 2005 08:57 AM

I really don't know...

Great toast!
BUT...

Falling a sleep is the last thing I do while beeing drunk. :(
What you said about the sin?..
...I really don't know.......do I have any chances to go to heaven?!

Ethnotour October 13th, 2005 01:22 AM

You've touched the very interesting theme:)
If you ever have drunk anything with an armenian or georgian you'll never forget it 8-) .Both or you'll with a nostalgie remember that, as a time spent with very joyful and interesting company ;-)b or you'll remember you headache after the drink, because you've drunk there with an individual who like toasts most of all(for whom dinking is time for "spreading of philosofic ideas" and time for "perorate" ;D ).He will tell you endless stories and will wish you so much "good luck"s ,which are impossible to reach during a life.

Here the most famous scenario of toast order (beers)
First toast is of warm welcomes.
Second is for Remembrance, for the victims we lost since Armenian Genocide up to Karabagh war, and for our died relatives.
Third is for Parents.
From fourth to N-th for Friendsheep, for good moments of life and memories and for girls, for adventure ŕíä so on. *<}:-) , :{:-) , *heart* , got2rifles , ;-%)
N-th toast is for Possibility of next time meet. (beers)

If after these they decide to continue drink they can reapet the toasts from third up to N-th.
:D

and the latest is "Thanks for food"
:-)`

Oh, YES!!! I can confirm this, as well as everything else you've mentioned! <:-) The toast tradition has become a real art with Armenians & Georgians! @};- That's a truly unforgettable feature! ;-)b

Most beliked toast

The one I like most is one of the Spanish toasts:

Salud - dinero y amor

...what is better to wish to one another than "health - prosperity and love" ...? ;)

The most funniest I know is a Japanese version, maybe used only in some Japanese companies. If a team is sitting together in the evening (very common) the one who says the toast shouts as loud as he can

Campaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

what takes some seconds and whilst the "toaster" is shouting, the groupe joins. So this kind of toasts are rather noisy 8|

Well, actually - Campai is very similar to : "Gan-Bay" (the english pingying spelling) which "Gan" = Dry and "Bay" = Cup. BTW that's chinese (mandarin to be exact)

Which means, finish your drink lol.

So when you say "Campai" or "Ganbay" with a bunch of people, you don't just take a drink... you're supposed to finish it.

Oridian October 13th, 2005 11:09 AM

Hi all!(wave)

Here's one of my favorite toasts, brilliant one!

To your health!
You make age curious,
Time furious,
And the rest of us envious!

Isn't it good? ;-)b

A great toast of good friends

this is a toast me and my buddy used to say all the time.

" Here's to you:), here's to me:), if we should ever disagree:(, F@CK you, here's to me!:D"

I love that one. ;)

Tilly October 18th, 2005 05:44 AM

hi!

Hello people (wave)

It's great that this thread is so active, it is always good to know some information on foreign cultures toasts, there exists this possibility of impressing your friends from other countries while siting at a table with them by saying a beautiful toast, that belongs to their countries, at least it would be very pleasant for me. I met a friend some days ago that comes from Georgia, Asia. He told me 3 beautiful toasts, that I want to share with you all. The first one is about friendship (beers) !!!

At a dinner in Georgia, there is a very important person ( I forgot how he is called, I'm sorry) that is respected a lot by everyone else. Nobody can drink more than this person and if soemone does, that is considered as a lack of respect for this person.. let's call him - the Oldest one. During a holiday, at a dinner, the Oldest one noticed that one man was drinking two glasses of wine and felt offended. He asked that man :
"- How come that you have two glasses at the same time, while I drink only one, this means you don't respect me.
-Last year my best friend died and he asked me always to drink in his place at holidays." The Oldest one found this excuse acceptable and admired the man for his devotion.
A year passed and these two persons met again at a dinner and this time, the Oldest one noticed that the man was drinking only a glass of wine each time and thought that the man was not honest with him. He approached to the man and asked:
"-Why are you having just one glass of wine now? Have you forgotten your friend? You don't drink in his place anymore.
-I drink just one glass of wine because I'm very ill and not allowed to have alcohol, so I drink just in my friend's place."

I found this toast very touching and powerful! Does anyone has other examples of this kind?

Guram Adamia November 7th, 2005 09:30 PM

fantastic thread i'll try to add one more:

on graves they always write :

lived from 19XX - (dash yap?) XXXX so let's drink for that dash cause that's biggest treasure we have.

P.s i hope my toast is easy to understand, it was quite difficult to translate from georgian

P.p.s thanks tilly for promoting georgian toasts BTW "the Oldest one" on georgian(not only georgian but caucasus too) dinner is called tamada and he is president, speaker and prime minister of all the people sitting around the table at that moment.

Tilly November 8th, 2005 06:32 AM

hi Guram!

Hi Guram and welcome to this forum !

It's really nice to see you here :) And thanks for the toast, it is deep, as all toasts should be:) and sorry for forgeting the "tamada" notion :(

Guramadamia November 9th, 2005 08:06 PM

thanks for warm welcome tilly :)
ok another toast:

I'll drink for a special person the person whome i love so much that i miss her/she even when she/he is standing in front of me.

p.s it seems it's very difficult to translate toasts to english .. quite pitty they sound far more better in georgian

Tilly November 10th, 2005 08:28 AM

:)

Dear Guram, these kind of toasts sound good in any language, as they promote great human values ;-)b

long toasts

hi guys. very nice topic, really like it a lot. i have a lot of frinds who are excelent toast tellers. It is always a pleasure to have a drink with them, cause there is always interesting things you may hear. But, unfortunately, at this moment, I can't remember entirely one single toast... too bad.
have to find him and ask some...
promise to bring some the next time I enter here :)

Re: long toasts

I'm coming right now from a party,so excuse my mistakes and most probably whatever I shall say;

Monique, very good idea with these toasts (toast :) double meaning, by the way, I burnt mine today!) - unfortunately, my state of being does not allow me of trully formulating one which would be acceptable and reasonable enough to be posted!

Although, one of my very good friends, when he got 18 received from a great kung-fuu-ist the follow idea :''life is made of bricks, stones and sand. Bricks are the things that matter most, as family and friends. Stones represents the job or the parties you've had. And sand symbolises the small, aparently insignificant things, like how many times you've been told 'lov ya'; But, if you were to fill a glass, you can only do that with bricks (quite a big glass, I reckon, a pint!), stones and sand. Life is that glass''

Or, as my german friend said today : ''I know i want to drink this glass because I know you want to see me drunk!''; fair enough;

take care; cheers! indeed;

Scottish toasts?

Hi, Dantes!(wave)

That toast with bricks, stones and sand sounds really philosophical. Do you have any Scottish toasts too? I would like to learn some traditional Sottish toasts. I guess they are funny.

NaturalBornShooter June 28th, 2006 07:29 AM

Party toasts

I have the shortest russian toast "Budem" (that is the russian pronuanciation), the english version would be "let's". As for a good toast to make a person to drink another one would be:

"A man was walking through the woods, he stoped at some travelers, spoke to them, had a drink with them and left, he did't like them, then he found another bunch of travelers, spoke to them, had a drink with them and left, he did't like them either, the same was with other groups, after leaving the last groups he was eaten alive by wolves, so let us drink for that if a person doesn' like our group, let the wolves eat him, CHEERS"

Re: Best toasts !

Here are some of my favorite toasts. I am not sure of their origin, but the only people I know in the states that toast are of Irish lineage (although there are toasts at weddings--they are not usually funny, but serious rather).

---------------------------------------------------------
May you have the hindsight to know where you’ve been

The foresight to know where you’re going

And the insight to know when you’re going too far.

---------------------------------------------------------

Here’s to our hostess, considerate and sweet;

Her wit is endless, but when do we eat!

---------------------------------------------------------

Pure water is the best gift a man can bring.

But who am I that I should have the best of anything?

---------------------------------------------------------
and my favorite

Here’s to the women who love me terribly, may they soon improve. ;D

Re: Best toasts !

Really nice Somecoolcat! :)) I agree with the woman thing :)))
here is an other interesting toast, why to drink beer!
Champagne costs too much,
Whiskey's too rough,
Vodka puts big mouths in gear.
This little refrain
Should help to explain
Why it's better to order a beer!

monique July 13th, 2006 06:17 AM

Re: Best toasts !

and here is one in reply to Irish Man's toasts, which, by the way i liked most

In heaven there is no beer...
That's why we drink ours here.

Re: Best toasts !

hahaha those are both good!!!

here is another one:

I used to know a clever toast,

But pshaw! I cannot think it --

So fill your glass to anything

And, bless your souls, I'll drink it.

Re: Best toasts !
