Belize Anyone?
My husdband and I will be traveling to Belize in Jan. to see if it would be the place for us to retire. From all the info I have found on the net Corozal seems to be a nice area. Any one know this area or have any info we might be interested in. Also, how long does it take to drive from Belize city to Corozal?

How was Belize, DJ?
Hi DJ,
How was Belize? Did you like it? What impressed you most of all there? Would you recommend it to any other tourists? Daniela |
Belize
Hi Daniela,
As you requested here is a short excerpt from my travel story covering Belize: Belize also has the world's second largest barrier reef and it passes close by Caye Caulker. We went snorkeling in the reef. In what was a truly amazing experience we swam with sharks, stroked them, held them and even kissed them (at least I did). This might seem very unlikely but there is a very rational explanation for it which you will not hear from the guides: The sharks are so used to human visitors and the guides feed them, so they have become rather tame. They meet every new boat that arrives at the reef and leave in search of the next boatload of people as soon as they notice you are heading back to your boat. Our guide however was really great and I could sense he had a great love for these sharks. I lost any fear for sharks I might have had. Besides the number of people attacked by sharks per year in the world can be counted on the fingers of one hand, while humans on the other hand kill tens of thousands of sharks each year. I guess to make shark-fin soup, something I vow never to eat! |
Hi everybody,
Every time I visit this forum and read about member’s travel experience and I realize again and again that there are so many countries in this world that are so beautiful and we know so little about them! For me only Rio de Janeiro represented South America. I never thought that there are even nicer places there. At least I saw that the beaches in Belize are cleaner than in Rio.B-*7 As I saw the greatest memory for you about in Belize is swimming with sharks. Well, this makes it an unforgettable trip!8| I don't think I would have done that!8-( What else did you like there (besides the beach)? For what else is Belize considered a nice destination? Thanks, Carina |
Islands
Hi Carina,
Our stay in Belize was limited to the islands and a night in Punta Gorda (on our way to Guatemala by boat). Besides swimming with the sharks we did some sailing. There is more to do of course but as always time was limited. |
Hi,
No offense, but Belize doesn't look like there's a lot to see there. The beach is nice and it seems that that is all8-) Honestly I have no idea what else can you do there. For how many days have you stayed there and what are the other things that a tourist can do there? Thanks, Carina |
Well why confine yourself to one country? If you had 2 or 3 weeks you could do the islands of Belize (beats Cancun for sure), visit Tikal in Guatemala and Chichen Itza in Mexico see some more of the Yucatan or venture further into Guatemala. Belize is so small, it would be like confining yourself to Quintana Roo (in Mexico).

Re: Belize Anyone?
I've visited Belize last year and was in the Islands San Pedro and Caye Caulker very nice. San Pedro Ambergris Caye is an more outgoing town in every way, snorkeling, diving and mainland tours are more active in ambergris caye. Caye Caulker is more laid back and slow much more cheaper than ambergris caye.
Its the same for Corozal Town its a very laid back and very quite town especially during the nights. Corozal is the town border to Mexico, everything is cheap there, friuts, veggies, rent even restaurants are very cheap. Its perfect for retiring people, I met a couple of people that told me that they make trips over the mexican border to do some shopping for selected groceries, clothing and they also go to the movies there. To drive over the mexican border its only 25 minutes, to drive from Belize City to Corozal is roughly 2 hours. I would say go for it apart from cheap, quite the people in Corozal are very friendly and helpful people. ;-)b |
Re: Belize Anyone?
So where in Corozal did you stay? How long was your journey? Were you alone?
