Hi

there is one castle in The Netherlands, for sure, in Den Helder (abt. 2 car hours from Amsterdam Airport, directly at the BEAUTIFUL!! seaside. And: you can find a real big museum of warcraft there (not only guns, arms for Knights, also the whole stuff necessary for fighting and protection).

There is no castle in Den Helder.

Well...

And what about Kijkduin, the Napoleon Fortress in castle-style (see http://www.fortkijkduin.nl/)?

Sorry, when I am posting I am sure!

Reinhard

P.S. you can find a lot about Netherlands protective buildings in the internet....... ;)

Believe me, I know! I've seen and fotographed all castles in the Netherlands, and there is no castle in Den Helder. A fortress is not a castle.

Reinhard December 12th, 2004 07:29 AM

I am sure

see the construction plan ..., and, as I told, it is a "fortress with building style of a castle"

so, this should be good enough for this thread now :)

Hmmm... Well... This time I'm really afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough of the matter in hand to be able to objectively mediate your dispute. However, as far as I can get it, there's a sensible misunderstanding about the "castle vs. fortress" issue. Anyway, whatever it is, I'm sure it's not worth sacrificing friendship for its sake!

You know, I sometimes immerse myself deep into the Middle Age atmosphere too. However, what I like about it, is not the belligerent attitude that used to be so pervasive those days, but rather the noble chivalry, dignity, and camaraderie among the honorable dwellers of a castle! ;)

Oh, I'm really sorry if this seems to be a dispute

that's why I placed a smiley behind!

There is nothing to have trouble about matters, other minds never need to get in trouble.

But "squeezing" a little bit, I hope this is allowed, Castle Ghost & Denis!

Have a fine evening!

Reinhard

P.S. To knwo better what I mean have a look on the site mentioned in my posting. (double ring-wall, thermic de-smoking of the troop compartment in the basement, high and very thick protective walls with "chutes" inside).

Peter van der Wielen December 12th, 2004 02:23 PM

When I talk about castles, then I'm talking about medieval buildings, that were inhabitable and defendable, and have a link with a noble family. That is the definition we use at the Dutch Castle Foundation; fortresses etc. are not included, because all of them are built after 1550. Not included are also castle-like buildings; if you do that, then you can call every 19th century villa a castle.

Since more then ten years we are making an inventory of all Dutch castles ever existed within the Netherlands, and the most northern castle at the west coast is Schagen Castle, still a few miles under Den Helder. In Den Helder has never been a castle; the only 'castle-like' building is the Marine Museum, which once was a part of a defence line.

so please

accept my apologize, even as I pointed out that Kijkduin is - like all Napoleon protective buildings - built on the resource (!) of a castle which means it is a FORTRESS, yes, but the construction "Father" is a castle in the 1250's style (double ring walls).

If you like to know more about that, please let me have a PN as Napoleon Protective Building style is one of my favorites.

A friend is a present you give yourself!

It always feels great to have nice friends and enjoy the cordial atmosphere among them! ;)

I suppose we're all fighting on the same side of the castle now, aren't we?! :D

Thank you, dear KNIGHTS!
