Centre of Europe?

As I can remember there has always been a question - where is the center of Europe situated? Each country located relatively in the central area of the continent contested this title- the center of Europe. Is there any consensus reached? How do you think in which country is this geographic point situated?

well...

well, it all depends where you think we should start 'counting' from... If you think that Portugal is in the east of the world, and America at the centre of it, with Asia in the West, we're nothing but... in between (rest of Europe);

Who cares anyway where's the centre of Europe, with this new bloody E.U. emerging? It's becoming nothing else but a big 'thingy' who has no ends... They even consider Israel adhesion...

cheers

Re: Centre of Europe?

In a magazine I subscribe to, hidden europe, they had a feature on this very issue last November. See http://www.hiddeneurope.co.uk for their website, and the article was in Issue 5, Nov 2005, p.20. They suggest that the village of Dilove, south of Rakhiv in Ukraine, has a good claim, while, taking another configuration of European boundaries, then Purnuskes in Lithuania might have the edge. Both spots are marked by memorial plinths.

Re: Centre of Europe?

Guys, you really made a job in giving a very comprehensive answer and I don't have very much to add, except that this is a really difficult opperation to calculate this center...(very long proposition:D ).
What I think is that it definetly depends on the points of reference you pick. The most easy way would be to pick the extreme points in E,W,N and S of the continent, then tracing the lines between them. But it is still an issue where some exremes are situated (I mean the eastern extreme of Europe)....long discussion anyway.
good thread thouh
I would strongly encourage other oppinions.

Re: Centre of Europe?

I would regard Prague, Bratislava or Budapest as the real centre of Europe.

Re: Centre of Europe?

I think that Matz has a good point here

It's not only about the geographic centre of Europe, but also the cultural point. In this order of idea, I agree that cities like Prague or Budapest or Berlin have preserved the European spirit. I would even include Brussels here.

Re: Centre of Europe?

geographically it would be hard to calculate.
politically either Brussels or Strasburg
economically Luxemburg or Switzerland

but different people from different countries will always dis-agree

Re: Centre of Europe?

In order to calculate a centre, it's necessary to see the extreme points.

It's clear for me where the S, N, W extreme points are. But where is the Eastern one?

Vorkuta!

But the centre of Europe is not something you calculate.
