Default Eryops - An Ancient Amphibian

Eryops was a type of amphibian that lived during the Permian period. It was about 5 feet (1.5 m.) long. This creature had wide ribs, broad elongated jaws, and four short legs. There were four toes on each of the front feet and five toes on both of the back feet. Eryops was of a Labyrinthodont group of the order Temnospondyli. The family was Eryopidae and the genus was Eryops. Eryops megacephalus was the type species.
Eryops lived in marshes and laid its eggs in water or in damp areas on land. Fossils of it have been found in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexioc. It was a carnivore and its diet largely consisted of fish, though Eryops most likely also ate smaller amphibians as well as small reptiles.
But Eryops also had enemies, both in the water and on land. A freshwater shark called Oracanthus lived in the waters of the swamps. A ferocious reptilian predator called Dimetrodon prowled about on the land in its areas. Dimetrodon was over 11 feet long, so it would have been a threat to Eryops.

P.S. Temnospondyls were an amphibian order that varied greatly in size. Some were only about 6 inches (15 cm.) long. Others were 16-31 feet (5-19 m.) in length. They existed during the Carboniferous, Permian periods. Some were around during the Mesozoic (era of the dinosaurs). Their heyday was the late Carboniferous and the Permian.

P.P.S. This order also included these genera:

Platyhystrix
Peltobatrachus
Baracyclotosaurus
Gerrothorax
