Activities In The Local Area:

Golf:
There are four Championship Golf Courses in the area. These are Turnberry, Royal Troon, Prestwick and Western Gailes. Turnberry is a half hour drive. The other three are approximately one hour’s drive. The cost of a round of golf on one of these courses is between £105.00 and £150.00 per person.

To book tee times on any of the above courses it is a requirement to book and pay a deposit in advance. Once a booking is made cancellation usually means loss of deposit.

There are many other high quality courses in the area, the nearest being Stranraer, Port Patrick, Brunston Castle and Glenluce. All are about half an hour’s drive from the castle. These are not championship courses, but they are all excellent, and offer a challenge to any golfer. The cost of a round of golf on one of these courses is between £20.00 and £30.00 per person.

The following activities can also be arranged at the Turnberry Resort:

* Clay Target Shooting – approx £40.00 for 25 clays;
* Air Rifle Shooting – approx. £28.00 for 45 minutes;
* Archery – approx. £28.00 for 1 hour;
* Quad-Biking – approx. £28.00 for 1 hour;

Horse Riding:
Supervised Horse riding is located half an hour’s drive from the castle at ’Shanter Stables’. The riders are usually taken along a route, which takes in the beach at Maidens then on into the Culzean Country Park. The stables cater for all levels of experience. The cost is £14.00 per person per hour.

Salmon Fishing:
The River Stinchar is highly regarded by Scottish salmon fishermen. It is a spate river, and is therefore at its best after rain. The season is from 25th February to 31st October each year. Some of the best pools are located within a fifteen-minute drive of the castle, and fishing, with the services of a ghillie can be arranged by advance booking. Some ghillies can supply rods and other equipment. Cost approximately £45.00 per rod per day.

Trout Fishing:
Twenty minutes from the castle, there is a well stocked loch, with rods for hire, for both bank and boat fishing. There is a clubhouse and snacks are available. Cost approximately £20.00 for a full day fishing.

Shooting:
With prior notice, we can arrange walked up or driven pheasant and partridge shooting (1st September/October to 1st February), as well as excellent rough shooting for snipe, woodcock, geese and duck (August to February).

Boat Trips:
Sail to the island of Ailsa Craig and climb the massive granite rock, which is a famous bird sanctuary, and houses the remains of a monastery and a ruined castle. With luck, you may see porpoises and seals on your journey. Advance booking is required. Minimum cost is £140.00.

Sea Fishing And Diving:
The waters around Ailsa Craig provide excellent diving and sea fishing. Day trips can be arranged with advance booking.

Tank Driving:
One hour from the castle, you can drive tanks, amphibious vehicles and four wheel drive jeeps across a challenging course. Advance booking is required. Cost is £30.00 per person per vehicle.

Distillery Tour:
Near the tank driving, visitors can tour the ’Bladnoch’ Distillery and sample the unique flavor of one of only two lowland malt whiskies. Further samples can be purchased in the shop!

Wigtown Book Town:
This small town, five minutes from the distillery, is home to a multitude of antiquarian bookshops, as well as being the scene of the unfortunate end of the ’Wigtown Martyrs’.
