Activities In The Local Area:
There are four Championship Golf Courses in the area. These are Turnberry, Royal Troon, Prestwick and Western Gailes. Turnberry is a half hour drive. The other three are approximately one hour’s drive. The cost of a round of golf on one of these courses is between £105.00 and £150.00 per person.
To book tee times on any of the above courses it is a requirement to book and pay a deposit in advance. Once a booking is made cancellation usually means loss of deposit.
There are many other high quality courses in the area, the nearest being Stranraer, Port Patrick, Brunston Castle and Glenluce. All are about half an hour’s drive from the castle. These are not championship courses, but they are all excellent, and offer a challenge to any golfer. The cost of a round of golf on one of these courses is between £20.00 and £30.00 per person.

* Clay Target Shooting – approx £40.00 for 25 clays;
* Air Rifle Shooting – approx. £28.00 for 45 minutes;
* Archery – approx. £28.00 for 1 hour;
* Quad-Biking – approx. £28.00 for 1 hour;
* Karting – approx. £28.00 for 1 hour;
* 4x4 Driving – approx £50.00 for 1 hour.
Supervised Horse riding is located half an hour’s drive from the castle at ’Shanter Stables’. The riders are usually taken along a route, which takes in the beach at Maidens then on into the Culzean Country Park. The stables cater for all levels of experience. The cost is £14.00 per person per hour.
The River Stinchar is highly regarded by Scottish salmon fishermen. It is a spate river, and is therefore at its best after rain. The season is from 25th February to 31st October each year. Some of the best pools are located within a fifteen-minute drive of the castle, and fishing, with the services of a ghillie can be arranged by advance booking. Some ghillies can supply rods and other equipment. Cost approximately £45.00 per rod per day.
Twenty minutes from the castle, there is a well stocked loch, with rods for hire, for both bank and boat fishing. There is a clubhouse and snacks are available. Cost approximately £20.00 for a full day fishing.
With prior notice, we can arrange walked up or driven pheasant and partridge shooting (1st September/October to 1st February), as well as excellent rough shooting for snipe, woodcock, geese and duck (August to February).
Sail to the island of Ailsa Craig and climb the massive granite rock, which is a famous bird sanctuary, and houses the remains of a monastery and a ruined castle. With luck, you may see porpoises and seals on your journey. Advance booking is required. Minimum cost is £140.00.
Sea Fishing And Diving:
The waters around Ailsa Craig provide excellent diving and sea fishing. Day trips can be arranged with advance booking.
One hour from the castle, you can drive tanks, amphibious vehicles and four wheel drive jeeps across a challenging course. Advance booking is required. Cost is £30.00 per person per vehicle.
Near the tank driving, visitors can tour the ’Bladnoch’ Distillery and sample the unique flavor of one of only two lowland malt whiskies. Further samples can be purchased in the shop!
Wigtown Book Town:
This small town, five minutes from the distillery, is home to a multitude of antiquarian bookshops, as well as being the scene of the unfortunate end of the ’Wigtown Martyrs’.
Visit the archaeological excavation of the site where the first Christians to land on mainland UK settled.
Glenapp Castle is 90 minutes south of Glasgow.
Children: When sharing with an adult, accommodation for children under 5 years old is free of charge, with meals charged as taken. Children aged 5 to 15 years, when sharing a suite with two adults, are charged a Dinner Bed and Breakfast Rate of £100.00 per day.
Arrival and Departure Times: Guests may arrive at the castle from 1.00pm on the day of arrival. On the day of departure, check out time is 11.00am
Deposit and Cancellation: We require a deposit of £100.00 per room per night at the time of booking. Please note that a reservation constitutes a contract with the hotel. Deposit payments are not refundable if the reservation is cancelled thirty days or less from the date of arrival. An administration fee will be charged on all refunded deposits. If the reservation is cancelled 72 hours or less from the date of arrival, the cost of the reservation is liable to be paid in full. We therefore strongly recommend that guests insure against cancellation.
Exclusive Use and Weddings: The castle can be made available for exclusive use by private parties of residents for conferences, weddings or other occasions. We can arrange golf on local championship or recreational courses, clay pigeon shooting and shooting or fishing on local estates and rivers for parties, or for individual guests. We will be delighted to discuss your requirements and to give you a personal quotation.
Disabled Facilities: Please advise us at the time of booking if you require disabled facilities, or if you have difficulty with stairs as our lift does not serve all areas of the castle.
Young Children: Accommodation for children under the age of 5 years is free of charge, when sharing with two adults. These young children are not permitted in the public areas or dining rooms after 6.30pm. Children’s high teas are served in the dining room between 5.30pm and 6.00pm, and all meals are charged as taken.
Babysitting services are available and should be requested at the time of booking. A selection of books, games and videos are available for younger children.
Dogs: Dogs are accepted at the discretion of the management, and by prior arrangement only. They are not permitted in the public areas and are only permitted in the ground floor bedrooms where they must not be left unaccompanied.
Drinks Service and Room Service: Please note that drinks service and room service will cease at 1.00am each evening.
Special Dietary Requirements: We serve a six-course set dinner menu each evening. We therefore request that you let us know, at the time of booking, if you have any special dietary requirements.
Smoking: Smoking is only permitted in the library.
