The lodge is located in the heart of the Kodiak Island National Wildlife Refuge, and has 11 private guest rooms, 5 boats, 2 floatplanes and a friendly staff of 10. If you are looking for first-class, professional service on Kodiak Island, you will find it here at Zachar Bay Lodge. We pride ourselves on providing excellent service. Our daily fishing or wildlife viewing adventures are designed to be fun, educational, safety-oriented, and to leave-no-trace on the environment. You can enjoy the variety that Zachar Bay has to offer. Whether you enjoy fishing lakes, rivers or the ocean, we have a package that is right for you.
FISHING - You can satisfy all your fishing desires at Zachar Bay Lodge. Whether you are a seasoned fisherman or an eager novice, we have the equipment and knowledge to provide you the best possible fishing experience on Kodiak Island. Our expert guides will take you on an adventure - whether it's fishing remote lakes and river systems for salmon or jigging for halibut in the protected waters of Zachar Bay.
HUNTING - Zachar Bay is an ideal location for hunting Sitka Blacktail Deer. Located in the heart of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, we provide access to some of the best hunting on the Island. Rent a skiff for the day to hunt the shoreline of the bay, utilize the boat shuttle service to access areas of the bays, or hunt up the mountain behind the lodge. At the end of the day hang your trophy in our large, bear proof meat-house and then relax in one of our warm and cozy cabins.
Surrounding buildings make up our guest quarters, which are clean and comfortable and retain the quaint cannery atmosphere. We can accommodate up to 22 guests in 11 private guest rooms, each cozily furnished with two single beds, dresser, nightstand, mirror, closet, posters, rugs and heaters, private or shared bathrooms and hot showers. We provide pillows, sheets, blankets, towels and soap, and rooms are cleaned daily. Guests are fed family-style in the spacious dining hall. Dawn, our cook, serves sumptuous (and lots of it!) buffet meals of fresh halibut, salmon and delicious homemade bread, pies and desserts. We have a stock of rubber boots, raincoats and rainpants for the guests to use.
ZACHAR BAY LODGE FACILITY FOR HUNTERS - Our facility offers you several advantages over camping in the Kodiak area - the most appreciated would be the secure meat house by those hunters who have ever had problems with bears when camping. The large meat house (20'x100') is in the historic cannery on the dock, which has electricity, large meat processing tables and plenty of room to hang and process your venison. We have three cabins which you will stay in depending on your party size. Each is equipped with a wood or oil fired stove, gas cooking stove, electricity, water, beds, tables, and kitchen utensils. All you need to bring is your hunting gear, sleeping bags and food for your stay.
Nearby attractions and activities:
Full day guided trips from the lodge offer you the opportunity to view and experience wildlife in its natural environment with a minimum disturbance to the animals and their habitat. New and varied adventures occur on every trip. You will see a variety of marine and land animals in their natural surroundings. We suggest a four day stay to be able to view all the wildlife that we have to offer.
KODIAK BROWN BEAR VIEWING - Kodiak Island is well known for its fishing and bears. The Kodiak Brown Bear is one of the largest carnivores on earth. Over 3,000 bears make their home throughout the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, and Zachar Bay Lodge is surrounded by this wildlife haven.
KODIAK BIRD WATCHING - Kodiak Island has one of the most diverse populations of birds in the whole state of Alaska. Summer lures many migrant birds to nest and feed upon the plentiful supply of food. The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge indicates that there have been 237 species of birds recorded in the Kodiak archipelago.
KODIAK MARINE WILDLIFE - A large part of what makes Kodiak Island unique is the large populations of marine mammals such as seals, sea lions and otter. Zachar Bay has a seal estuary right within its boundaries, and an occasional sea lion will swim through the bay in search of salmon. Sea otters drift in and out with the tide and ocean currents, and there can be pods from 50 to 100 animals.
MOUNTAIN HIKING & ZACHAR RIVER - If you like to hike, you will enjoy the hiking opportunities at Zachar Bay Lodge! One of our guides, Ian Jansma, will take you to the tops of the mountains to gain a spectacular view of Kodiak.
