For tarpon, snook and multitude of light tackle game fish, there is no place in the world that compares to Archie Fields' Rio Colorado Lodge, nestled in Costa Rica's tropical jungle where the Colorado River flows into the Caribbean Sea. The Rio Colorado Lodge is built on the banks of the Colorado River, right at its mouth where it empties into the sea and where fishing is frequently the best. The whole complex is built on stilts, elevating it from the ground and is under cover, shielding it from the rain. Rooms are double roofed, providing a cooling, insulating effect for your comfort. Even the walkways and dock are roofed for your convenience.

Property amenities:
18 comfortable rooms now air-conditioned (the only East Coast lodge with air-conditioned rooms). All have private baths, hot showers, electric fans and daily maid service (we can also take care of your laundry). Meals are served family style, all you care to eat, and the cuisine at the Rio Colorado Lodge has earned high praise from ardent fishermen from around the world. There is a comfortable recreation room with game tables, and you'll find a new video room with satellite TV, telefax equipment, a very well stocked tackle shop and ample outdoor lounging areas, and a very interesting zoo. We have a fully stocked bar with drinks at reasonable prices. Our daily Happy Hour is from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., when all rum drinks and soft drinks are "on the house."

We now provide you with the comfort of 23 ft. fiberglass boats, powered by NEW 90 HP, 4 stroke motors. Each boat has a center console, and two very comfortable fighting chairs with rod holders and U.S.C.G. approved safety equipment. Our entire fleet has fish finders, compasses and radios for maintaining contact with the Lodge and the other boats. Unquestionably, we have the finest, safest fleet of the best equipped boats on the Caribbean coast. Your boat will be stocked with a cooler and cold beverages, and you will be charged for the beverages consumed at a reasonable price.

Nearby attractions and activities:
Fantastic River Tour of Costa Rica - This tour gives the visitor an opportunity to know the N.E. 1/3 of Costa Rica in two delightful days and one restful night. With panoramic vistas at every turn, our luxury tour bus will pass fields of strawberries and ornamental plants grown for export and climb to approximately 8,000 feet, from where, on a clear day, one can see the Atlantic Ocean.

Experience a Caribbean Beach or Explore the Jungle - We'll stay overnight at this remote lodge, accessible only by boat or plane, and after lunch there will be plenty of time for a short rest in your own comfortable room with hot water shower, electric fan, etc. You can also pay a leisurely visit to the little village of Barra del Colorado, with its descendants of Jamaicans, enjoy the adjacent long, wide Caribbean beach on which you will be the only folks other than a possible local resident or two, for miles, or explore the jungle, only a few steps from the Lodge which is located in the midst of a National Wildlife Refuge.

Sea Turtles and the Tortuguero National Park - During the months of July, August and September, the itinerary of the tour will vary to take advantage of the annual phenomenon of thousands of sea turtles returning to the area of Colorado, each to lay 100's of eggs in the warm sand. We'll board the Colorado Queen for a trip down the canals to disembark at famous Tortuguero National Park. Here there is a very high probability that we will see one or more giant sea turtles, weighing up to 600 pounds, ending their trip from distant unknown origins, arduously climbing the beach, preparing a deep hole which will be protection and at the same time incubator for its offspring.

Policy:
If full payment of your package is received less than 30 days prior to arrival, we cannot guarantee confirmed seats on Sansa or Travel Air, the local domestic airlines, although we will do our best. If your seat is not confirmed, you will be charged the additional cost for a private charter airplane for transportation to and/or from the Lodge, or if you prefer, you may make your own travel arrangements to the Lodge and we will deduct from your package price, the amount allowed for round-trip airfare to the Lodge and refund it to you.

The prices include boat service to all the popular fishing grounds, the canals, rivers, lagoons, etc. and the Caribbean too. If your party wants to venture forth to more remote areas such as Nicaragua and you notify the Lodge manager a day in advance, for a fee of $50.00 extra per boat, we will be happy to provide you with a full day of uninterrupted fishing from 6:00 A.m. until 3:00 P.M. with a box lunch furnished.

Space and weight is limited to 25 LBS including luggage and tackle on the flight between San Jose and the Lodge, so please keep your baggage to a minimum. Baggage in excess of 25 LBS may be allowed at your expense and subject to space and weight restrictions as determined by the air carrier. Your hotel in San Jose will check your extra luggage until your return.

Charter air craft are available at extra cost for travel at times when commercial nights are not available. Non-fishing guests are welcomed at the Lodge at a rate of $120.00 per day.
