Mongolia River Outfitters offers guided floating and fishing trips from our private camp in a remote corner of Mongolia. We provide multi-day rafting adventures and camp-based guided fishing trips in the Mongolian wilderness. From our private camp along the Onon River, we offer discerning clients exclusive access to nearly two-hundred miles of pristine waters including the main-stem, two large tributaries, several spring creeks and lakes.
Imagine your favorite stream. You remove every other boat, shop, picnicker, and angler. Let the water flow through smoky mountains haunted by wolves and wild elk. Put in an intimate, comfortable camp with great food and professional guides. Take a few liberties and feed the river with clear spring creeks and make it a hundred miles long. Fill the streams with taimen - the world's largest salmonid - and lennok and grayling and, for variety, throw in a couple of ponds with perch and pike.
Mongolia reminds most folks of the American West… with a significant distinction. Development does not constrain Mongolia's countryside. No dams and few paved roads or fences blight the scenery and most locals continue a nomadic, horse-riding lifestyle. The Onon's waters flow through broad valleys flanked by larch, pine and birch covered mountains. Local wildlife includes a host of rare birds, wolves, brown bear, moose, elk, musk and roe deer.
We have run Mongolia expeditions for nearly two decades and are proud to have provided exceptional travel adventures for some of the world's most discerning clients. Our English speaking staff delivers exceptional, friendly, informed service with the objective of making the wilderness experience a relaxing pleasure. We like to eat well and our cooks are up to the challenge. They create sumptuous meals perfectly suited to western tastes.
Most of our guests are accommodated in Mongolian gers (yurts). These spacious, dome shaped structures are constructed with a wooden frame insulated by layers of felt and weatherproof canvas. Each ger has ample space to walk around and is completed with a wood stove, two twin beds with linens, table and chairs. Bathroom facilities are ex-suite. And yes, the showers are hot.
On multi-day backcountry trips, we provide great service and meals along with tented accommodations. The boats carry everything needed for a comfortable wilderness experience.
Nearby attractions and activities:
There's plenty to do around camp for folks not necessarily interested in fishing or river trips. Horses, hikes, and visits with local families are all easily arranged. We can organize single or multi-day journeys into the backcountry or the rest of Mongolia for you and/or your companion.
Fishing can be fantastic during every warm weather month. However, in June, early July, September and October the streams tend to be gin clear and the fishing incredible. High-pressure weather usually rests over the area during these months bringing chilly nights and pleasantly warm, sunny days. Floating the river is good fun anytime from May into October.
There is much more to Mongolia than beautiful rivers and we highly recommend that time allowing you visit other parts of the country. We specialize in operating natural history and cultural tours and would gladly arrange visits for you to places like the Gobi Desert, Karakorum, Hovsgol Lake, Altai Mountains or the Eastern Steppes.
ONON FISHING WEEKS - US$3,750
This is an adventure designed exclusively for enthusiastic anglers. Scheduled during the peak autumn period, this is the angling trip we all want to guide.
After an evening in Ulan Bator, we take a helicopter shuttle to the river (the ride is just over an hour). Fishing for taimen from guided drift boats is the primary interest with plenty of opportunity to cast for other fish species. Lunch is served streamside and evening dinner is back at camp.
These trips include nearly six full days of fishing and two nights in Ulan Bator. Price covers all guides, meals, accommodation, fishing fees, and transportation while in country. There is a limit of four to six anglers per departure.
ONON RIVER WILDERNESS ADVENTURE - US$3,450
This is multi-day wilderness river expedition that will appeal to anyone who enjoys comfortable, guided adventure river trips. This full-service journey offers spectacular wild scenery and culture. The real adventure begins with a helicopter ride into the Onon's remote headwaters. From here we float for seven days through wild Mongolia, taking time to explore and fish along the way. Each night, we'll settle into our comfortable, mobile wilderness camp… sipping river chilled drinks while we wait to see what the cooks have created.
Along the route, we'll take time for hiking, fishing, horse riding, and visiting with local families. We end our adventure by driving across the wilds of Mongolia back to Ulan Bator. Each drift boat will seat a guide and two clients so everyone gets their own casting seat. You fish or enjoy the scenery while the guide does all the rowing.
The trip includes seven days along the river and two nights in Ulan Bator. The expedition is full-service and the price covers all guides, meals, accommodation, fishing fees, and transportation while in country. There is a limit of six to eight clients per departure.
THE EVERYMAN BARGAIN SHAKEDOWN RIVER CRUISE - US$1,450
Our nine-day early summer adventures are great for folks interested in seeing lots of Mongolian countryside while "roughing" it a bit. This trip has it all in an inexpensive package… a three-day wilderness float, two cultural days in Ulan Bator and four days of exploring the countryside by vehicle.
After spending the first evening in Ulan Bator, we drive along the "north road" for two leisurely days. The route navigates a number of small mountain passes with great views and offers several opportunities to visit nomadic families. The scenery is incredible with wildflowers just coming into peak. We'll stop along the way to investigate Ghenghis Khan's gravesite. Once on the upper Onon, it's three full days of floating through idyllic meadows, pastures and woodlands. Our take-out point is Binder Soum, the birthplace of Ghenghis Khan. From Binder, we drive for a day and a half back to Ulan Bator along the "south road" where we'll get a taste of the expansive Mongolian steppes.
This camping trip has only minimum support staff. We float the river using a combination of oar boats and paddleboats. You'll be expected to help the raft guides paddle and to pitch your own tent. The "roads" are typical rough and tumble Mongolia - four-wheel drive only. Meals are simple, hearty and filling.
The adventure includes two nights tourist class accommodation in Ulan Bator, two tented nights in transit between Ulan Bator and the river, and four tented nights along the river. The price covers all guides, meals, accommodation, and transportation while in-country. There is a broad limit of four to twelve clients per departure. We allow only six anglers (first come, first served) and will charge an additional angling fee.
