There’s tranquillity in the African Bush that creeps up unexpectedly and nestles in your soul. Maybe it is because nature is so close - the wildlife and the birds, the wind in the trees- or maybe it’s just Africa and its rhythms.
Tucked away in Zambia, along the meandering banks of the mighty Zambezi River, you will find Mvuu Lodge, “The Place of the Hippo”. We are perfectly situated 18 km from the Lower Zambezi National Park, in the Chiawa Game Management Area and right opposite Mana Pools. We are privileged to be based in this pristine part of Zambia and we are delighted to share this solitude and scenic beauty with our guests. Our luxury safari tents will evoke the romantic side of you while our self-catering tents and camping sites will offer you nature at its undisturbed best. Wild animals roam casually through our premises providing you with a truly unforgettable experience. Dinner is served outdoors in the boma or on the viewing deck, where the roaring fire and nocturnal calls of the wild create the perfect, relaxing end to an exhilarating day. We invite you to come and indulge in a true African experience and rejuvenate your soul. Accommodation We have something to suit every need - from luxury accommodation that includes all your meals to self-catering and camping facilities. The luxury safari tents (5), each with en suite facilities, are on raised wooden decks overlooking the river, naturally blending in with the surrounding environment. In keeping with the tranquil, unspoilt surroundings, Mvuu Lodge minimizes the use of a generator and hurricane lamps are used for lighting so that the African Bush experience is enhanced. The self-catering tents (3), each with en suite facilities, are on raised wooden decks overlooking the river in an unspoilt natural setting. Each tent has a private braai area and is equipped with the necessary linen, cutlery and crockery. The campsites (4) are situated in close proximity to the Lodge and are nestled in thick bush under a canopy of indigenous trees, providing a cool haven from the African Sun. All the campsites have private facilities with a hot shower, flush toilet and braai area. The ablution facilities are enclosed by stone walls and roofed by the majestic Zambian sky. Activities Being an area rich in wildlife, game viewing is exceptionally rewarding and is enjoyed in an open 4x4 game vehicle. Boat rides that make their way along the Zambezi also offer exceptional rewards to nature lovers. Our Canoe Safari is truly an unforgettable experience and brings you within close proximity of the wild life of the mighty Zambezi. You can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery from our River Cruiser. Stretching 9 meters long and 2 ½ meters wide, it can accommodate 20 people. Onboard facilities include a bar and toilet and a spacious top deck that can be used for fishing or just for basking in the sun. Get your adrenalin pumping by fishing in some of the best Tigerfish waters in the world where fish of between 6 kg to 9kg are landed every season. Any keen fisherman is welcome to take up the challenge using either conventional or fly tackle. Fish from the banks of the river or from the boat or join our fishing safaris. Whichever way you choose, you will find this fishing experience exhilarating. Then there is something for those who like to take a stroll through a breathtaking landscape: With the beautiful scenery this area has to offer, environmental awareness trails will lead you into the heart of a timeless environment. It is rich in birdlife, lending itself to ideal bird watching opportunities. There are also an abundant variety of indigenous tree species for enthusiasts. For a more relaxed approach, the beautiful scenery can be enjoyed through photography, star gazing or simply by cooling down in the pool. However, if complete relaxation is all you need, we recommend a good book from our library, your favourite beverage and a cozy spot on the viewing deck overlooking the mighty Zambezi. There is nothing more pleasurable than unwinding with sundowners as the sun gently sets. Every day at Mvuu Lodge ends around the warmth of a log fire accompanied by the sounds of the African Bush. Getting to us There are various means of getting to the Lodge: For those who wish to get there as fast as possible, a chartered flight is the way to go. From Lusaka the flight takes approximately 30 minutes and from Livingstone, approximately 1 ½ hours. From the airstrip to the Lodge will only take a few minutes by boat or a scenic drive by game viewing vehicle. From Lusaka we can arrange a road transfer to Mvuu Lodge. Alternatively you can hire a vehicle and explore the road on your own. If you are more adventurous, you could drive right up to the Lodge and put your 4x4 through its paces on the final 20km stretch. From Lusaka it is a 2 hour drive to Chirundu (a border town on the Zambezi River) and another 2 ½ hours to Mvuu on a dirt road. From Chirundu it’s about an 80 km drive but the last 65 km is a dirt road and will take approximately 2 ½ hours. You will need a high clearance vehicle for this dirt road. From Chirundu there is an 11km gravel road to the pontoon across the Kafue River which operates from 06:00 – 18:00. The cost is around U$20 per trip/car. From Livingstone it’s about 496 km and will take approximately 7 hrs. Alternatively, you could leave your vehicle at Gwabi Lodge and make your way to the Lodge on a relaxing boat cruise while enjoying game viewing and the lush scenery along the banks of the river. Rest assured, once you arrive at Mvuu Lodge, you will discover tranquillity you can really get used to! Property amenities: Nearby attractions and activities: Policy: Packages: Notes:
