A 30 minute flight from Mahé by light aircraft gives the first stunning impressions of this 170 acre coral cay. The east and south sides are surrounded by a protective barrier reef which is home to many varieties of colourful tropical fish and the rest is an open beach which offers superb safe swimming. Bird Island Lodge offers a unique blend of hospitality, relaxation and simplicity in a natural environment. A family owned and run hotel, we have 24 simple but very comfortable individual chalets nestling amongst what remains of the island's old coconut plantation. Each has a king-sized bed, large shower room and separate toilet, lounge corner and spacious patio overlooking the gardens to the sea beyond. Each chalet will accommodate a third adult and child or two extra children. The main lodge houses a lounge, reception, a small boutique, a bar and an informal, open air restaurant where we serve a mixture of local cuisine and international dishes in a buffet style using fresh produce including fresh fish and vegetables from the island.
We have a very simple formula which clients love and come back for year after year. We have no televisions in the rooms: as we feel that this would detract from the natural sounds and sights around you. We have no air-conditioning: as the excellent natural ventilation and ceiling fans ensure the rooms are always kept cool. We have no telephones in the rooms or mobile phone reception: but there are telephone, fax and E-mail facilities available at the office. We have no swimming pool: as the beach offers excellent and safe swimming at all times. The island really is a true retreat from today’s busy world.
From May to October, the northern part of the island is home to over a million nesting sooty terns and with a year-round population of at least 20 other bird species it is an ornithologist’s heaven. Bird Island is also an important nesting site for sea turtles which can be seen, during daylight, coming up to lay their eggs between October and March. The turtle hatchlings can be observed emerging from their nests and racing to the sea from December through until April, a truly magical sight to witness. We also offer a safe haven for giant land tortoises and have over 25 of them free roaming around the island, including Esmeralda who is in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest land tortoise. Located on the edge of the Seychelles Bank, Bird Island is perfectly situated for nature boat excursions to look for dolphins, whales, manta rays and turtles. We also offer clients the chance to experience traditional hand line and big-game fishing with our fisherman of over 30 years, Clive.
Bird Island has, for many years, been involved in various conservation projects and has won many awards for its efforts. It is hailed as a true ‘ecotourism’ destination where the balance between nature and tourism has been successfully upheld for over 35 years. Clients who first visited the island back in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s still return year after year to experience the island and all that it offers and we are proud of having been able to maintain and conserve this little corner of the planet for the next generation to experience in the years to come. There is nowhere else quite like it.
